Index is a small series of acrylic paintings based on childhood photographs, exploring the relationship between memory, photography and the passage of time. The paintings closely reproduce the original photographs, retaining their composition, expressions and visual details while translating the familiar language of the photograph into paint.

The title Index refers to the photograph as a record of something that once existed: a physical trace of a person, place or moment that has since passed. In this sense, the images function as both personal documents and reminders of absence. The familiarity of the photograph is contrasted with the distance created by time, giving the works a quiet sense of nostalgia and melancholy.

Working from photographs allows the paintings to occupy an uncertain space between the immediacy of childhood and the perspective of looking back. The careful process of replication emphasises the desire to preserve these fleeting moments, while acknowledging that no reproduction can fully recover the experience itself. Through this tension between record and recollection, Index considers the emotional weight held within seemingly ordinary photographs and the sadness inherent in preserving moments that cannot be returned to.
