Cliff is a triptych of charcoal drawings exploring the geological structures of coastal cliff faces. Through expressive mark-making and layered charcoal, the work investigates the uncompromising and sometimes violent nature of this landscape.

Working at a large scale, charcoal is repeatedly built, erased and reworked to create dense tonal contrasts and surfaces that evoke compressed geological strata. The physicality of the process reinforces the cliffs’ monumental weight and density, allowing the medium itself to mirror the subject.

Rather than pursuing literal representation, the drawings emphasise mass, pressure and texture, using gesture and material to communicate the emotional and physical presence of the landscape. Existing between observation and abstraction, the series considers how the character of a place can be conveyed through process as much as through depiction.
